BHS grad receives repeat Tony nods

Bainbridge High School graduate David Zinn, Class of ’87, is once again in the spotlight — despite spending the majority of his exemplary theater career behind the scenes.

Zinn is among the 2018 Tony Award nominees (in the categories of “Best Scenic Design of a Musical” and “Best Costume Design of a Musical”) for his work on “Spongebob SquarePants.”

He previously received a Tony, his first, in 2016 for “Best Scenic Design of a Play” for his work on “The Humans.”

Zinn was nominated last year, but did not win.

The 72nd Annual Tony Awards will be held on June 10, to recognize achievement in Broadway productions during the 2017–18 season, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, and will be broadcast live by CBS.

Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles will act as hosts.

“Spongebob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical,” (originally titled “The SpongeBob Musical”) was nominated for “Best Original Musical” as well. It is based on the Nickelodeon animated television series “SpongeBob SquarePants” and made its world premiere in June 2016 at the Oriental Theatre in Chicago.
