Bainbridge Island Museum of Art to debut new summer exhibitions

The Bainbridge Island Museum of Art will unveil the 2019 summer exhibitions at a public opening from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 29.

Admission is free and open to all.

The museum’s summer offerings include: “Departures & Arrivals: Artists in Abstraction”; Joe Max Emminger’s “The Long Way Home”; Carol Milne’s “Knit Wit”; a selection from BIMA’s permanent art collection; and “A is for Accordion: An Abecedarian of Artist’s Books.”

Summer exhibitions run from June 29 through Sept. 29 in various galleries throughout BIMA.

In “Departures and Arrivals: Artists in Abstraction” BIMA convenes a kind of summer school — with an intense session in art vocabulary. This group show features 15 artists from the Puget Sound region, each communicating through transforming the familiar or sharing personal ways of seeing. Inspirations range from cultural histories to contemporary life.

The participants are Mark Bennion, Mary Coss, David Eisenhour, Charles Emerson, Anne Hirondelle, Michael Howard, Jan Hoy, Denzil Hurley, Fumiko Kimura, Steve Smith, Jono Vaughan, Robert Wagoner, Stephen Yates, Ellen Ziegler and Paul Ziakin.

In “The Long Way Home,” BIMA presents Joe Max Emminger’s first solo art museum exhibition. Emminger, a self-taught artist, takes a spontaneous and straightforward approach to painting. His work is typically colorful, bold, and whimsical — yet darker narratives also emerge.

Several series are featured, including those that portray Seattle and street musicians, families and cemeteries, and his delightful still lifes.

In “Knit Wit,” Carol Milne expands upon ancient kiln-cast glass techniques used during the Egyptian and Roman periods. Her intriguing and amusing glass sculptures defy the difficult and meticulous processes required to complete the work. Milne’s “knitted” sculptures go beyond realism and recreation, they also weave personal memories and stories.

Also included in the show are cast glass wall panels in garden motifs.
