Your voice is needed to stop Trump’s excessive budget for military | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

I see where homelessness is evident even on Bainbridge Island (“Bainbridge police clean up remains of homeless camp”).

I have lived in Central Kitsap pushing 50 years and have never even seen panhandling and homelessness here, until a few years ago. Did you know that there are over 1,000 homeless people here in Kitsap County alone?

On March 11, President Trump is expected to call for deep cuts to non-defense programs while increasing defense spending in his FY2020 budget plan. Out-of-control defense contractors help drive up military spending. The CEOs of the top five defense firms took home $97.4 million in 2017. We need to reject the proposed spending cuts and invest in housing assistance and other critical services that reduce poverty.

We can make a difference! Call the Washington, D.C. offices of Senator Marie Cantwell (202-224-3441) Senator Patty Murray (202-224-2621) and U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer (202-225-5916) and tell them they need to reject Trump’s budget proposal. The aide who answers the phone will be happy to relay your brief message.
