Please stay in your lane | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

Many drivers on the Island cross across the fog line onto the shoulder while making turns, which is not only dangerous, but also illegal.

One spot in particular is a right turn off Winslow Way onto Grow. The city of Bainbridge Island installed bumps with reflectors outside the white line, but this doesn’t stop drivers from cutting across the shoulder. Instead they just go bumping along over the reflective pavement bumps. I can guarantee that even the longest four-door pickup can make that turn while remaining in their lane. On more than one occasion I have been walking down Grow and have come face to face with a car on the shoulder, making a right turn, often causing them to slam on their brakes.

There are many places on the Island where brush blocks the view through the turn and you may be almost on top of a walker before you see them. Please just drive a little further before starting your turn and you won’t end up crossing the fog line onto the shoulder.

Thanks in advance for doing the right thing!
