Come gather with Seniors for a Peaceful World | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

UN Day of Peace is Sept. 21.

Climate change is a personal human issue. We have forgotten our interconnectedness to the earth, and to each other. When we don’t monitor our hearts, our prejudices and fears of other races, religions, countries, multiply leading people and nations into destructive human and environmental casualties and war.

Militarism and war are the greatest contributors to greenhouse gases and the increase in the carbon footprint. The destruction of life and property, cities, infrastructure, water and sewage systems, contaminating surrounding ecosystems, poisoning soil and water, destruction of forest, farms and fields and making refugees of the population. It takes a lot of recycling to do what learning to “Love your neighbor” could do for planet Earth.

“The International Day of Peace” (‘Peace Day’) is observed around the world each year on Sept. 21. Established in 1981 by an unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace. Above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.”

Why is peace important?

Because all of life is interconnected. Our fear, hatred and anger decreases the peace in the world; whereas our love, joy and gratitude increases the peace. It is important for all life on planet Earth and for the planet itself.

Open to all: Seniors for a Peaceful World. This conversation group focuses on the myriad forces for peace in our world. You may bring material that has inspired you to share, such as poetry, quotes, news items, works of art, videos, etc. It is a non-political, nonsectarian exploration, open to all.

Looking forward to your participation: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 at the Bainbridge Island Senior Center.
