City should get moving now on more bike lanes | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

Bainbridge Island needs to install bike lanes now.

We passed a bond to fund this yet no lanes created so far. Every major road has walkers, runners, bikers and occasionally horses every day.

Instead of spending our funds prudently, we get signs to share the road and reduced speed limits. I don’t want to go slower, but I want safe roads for all who use them.

Reducing speed by 5 mph won’t keep someone from getting injured or killed if they’re hit. We need lanes on both sides of roads to keep us safe in all conditions. Especially as we are moving into the darker wetter time of year.

The city has been derelict thus far in protecting Islanders. It’s only a matter of time before more people get hurt and the city and city council are named in more lawsuits.

Let’s get this done.
