Cast your votes for island stewardship | Letter to the editor

To the editor:

The city council unanimously passed a resolution to support the “Green New Deal.” Then Tirman, Blossom, Schneider and Deets turned their backs on that same resolution when they voted to put 100 units of high-density housing at the corner of Sportsman Club and New Brooklyn.

In addition, they voted to move forward with plans to put a sewer line through to Island Center so they can add 350-plus units of high-density housing there and bring major density from one side of the island to the other. This is not about affordable housing. It’s about expensive high density developments. These decisions are made without considering environmental policies and costs of development, including sustainability, traffic congestion, and the impact to our depleting aquifer.

Clearly Tirman, Blossom, Schneider and Deets do not understand how to combat climate crisis at the local level.

Michael Pollock and Grayson Wildsmith do understand. Their first priority is to enact a green building code, a regulation Schneider and Blossom have delayed. Pollock and Wildsmith will work with PSE for changes to achieve a carbon-neutral economy. Pollock, a NOAA scientist, is well prepared to move swiftly. Wildsmith, a strong public service advocate, is eager to change the status quo. Together they will implement the comprehensive plan in all new development, especially large projects with broad impact.

Islanders, we must fight climate change at the local level! Vote for Michael Pollock and Grayson Wildsmith.
