Island author Barbara Winther will visit Eagle Harbor Book Compnay at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17 to discuss her new book “The Time of the Kachinas.”

Winther’s expertise in Native American art, life and lore shine though in this tale about a Hopi village in Arizona, and the ceremonial Kachina year seen through the eyes of two young Hopi children, Hester and Honu.

From the time the first Kachina appears in December until the Niman in July, when the Kachinas go home, the children experience the magic and beauty of plaza dances. They learn that Kachina are messenger spirits essential for Hopi survival, for they bring rain to the arid lands. During the ceremonial year, Hopi children are taught important life lessons.

Winther operated Old Bear Trading Company with her husband for 21 years, representing many Native American artists. She has been a teacher for students from middle school to university, and for six years led the Native American Seminars at the University of California Extension.

Eagle Harbor Book Company is located at 157 Winslow Way East.
