Schmidt says there are photographers who travel the world taking stunning photographs.
"I stay at home and keep my eyes open," he said.
"I recently retitled my series of Bainbridge Island landscape photographs 'Walking Meditations,' but that term could easily describe my approach to all of my work.
"The term 'Walking Meditation' is a shamanic practice in which one asks a question or establishes an intention, and then goes on a walk, and what is experienced is interpreted as an answer," Schmidt explained. "That doesn't mean I have an intention or question in mind when I pick up the camera, but what has become clear is that my emotions and state of mind have a strong influence on the photograph, and therefore, something to tell me.
"The same principle holds true for the small objects and nests; when the juices are flowing, the subjects just appear in my life. It can be years later that I realize just how personal the image is to me. Perhaps my methods can be traced to my Native American heritage, and my great-great-grandfather, last chief and medicine man of his village. The natural world spoke to him and what he heard was considered medicine."
Schmidt is a Seattle native and has been a Bainbridge Island resident for the last 12 years. He is the owner of Art Capture, a small company that specializes in scanning and printing art for limited edition prints.
His work has been shown at Photographic Center Northwest, The Center for Fine Art Photography, Newspace Center for Photography, Gallery Fraga, and Bainbridge Arts & Crafts."My photography methods grew around the skills and equipment I acquired over the previous 20 years; a curious combination of film and digital," the artist said.
At his booth during the Winter Studio Tour, Schmidt will have both limited and open edition prints, framed and unframed, greeting cards, and a hand-bound, hand-printed book titled "Walking Meditations."
The Winter Studio Tour on Bainbridge Island will mark its 30th anniversary on Dec. 6, 7 and 8. More than 60 local artists will be on hand showcasing their work in nine local artists’ studios and community halls, in the free, self-guided art tour. There will also be a free raffle for a basket of art at each studio.
The studios are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. all three days, with live music provided by regional musicians and carolers. Each studio will be festively adorned for the holiday season, and full of hand-crafted artwork.
