BPA to present 'The Tempest' in the wild at IslandWood

Bainbridge Performing Arts and IslandWood are joining forces to present an outdoor performance of "The Tempest" for one week this summer.

The BPA Shakespeare Society will perform Shakespeare's story about magic, romance and regret at IslandWood’s Creaky Tree Meadow in August.

BPA and IslandWood announced the special program Wednesday.

“Despite being over 400 years old, Shakespeare’s works remain deeply entrenched in our language and world view,” said Tom Challinor, program director of the BPA Shakespeare Society. “Taking a Shakespeare play outside gives it new sights and sounds and smells, making it seem fresher than it does in a theatre or on a page.”

Organizers of the show said the setting in the meadow — with its tall cedars and moss-covered snags — will take advantage of the natural beauty of the Northwest.

“We're proud to offer community events and programs that seamlessly blend science and the arts with immersion in nature,” said Christina Doherty, IslandWood’s community education coordinator. “By bringing Shakespeare to IslandWood, we have a unique opportunity to entertain and engage our guests through performance art.”

The production will also offer opportunities for local actors and stagecraft professionals. Auditions for all roles will take place in March, and tickets will go on sale this spring.

The show is planned for July 31 through Aug. 8.
