Island artist turns pen to maritime work

For years artist Bill Hemp has been eying iconic Bainbridge homes and crafting pen-and-ink portraits of them. But lately he has set his sights beyond the island's shores.

Hemp will be signing posters for his latest series "Iconic Boats of Bainbridge" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Eagle Harbor Book Co. in Winslow.

Hemp found quite a range of attractive models to draw, from the 1991 houseboat "Genevieve" moored in Eagle Harbor to the 1913 schooner the "Ragland."

Even the recently retired state ferry the "Rhododendron" was captured by Hemp's pen. The ferry was built in 1947 and carried up to 48 cars on a Vashon Island-to-Seattle route. It is currently up for auction.

The artist will provide islanders another opportunity to see his pen at work on Dec. 6 as he signs his work.
