Honor John Nelson this weekend

Sunday afternoon starting at 12:30 p.m., citizens will have a chance to honor John Nelson, a Bainbridge resident who bequeathed his land to the city for use as a public park.

The event will feature Nelson’s favorite dishes cooked by former White House chef Rhey Orante and others.

The program for the afternoon features Stan Lund, Nelson’s nephew, a 1936 graduate of Bainbridge High School. Lund is the last living link to Nelson. Also in attendance will by the city treasurer from 1950, who was involved in the negotiations for Nelson’s land.

Nelson’s land near Vineyard Lane was later traded for land on the former Strawberry Plant, which is set to be restored for optimal salmon recovery habitat.

The event will take place at the Filipino American Community Hall, 7566 High School Road. For more information call 842-4164. Reservation encouraged.

Suggested donation is $10.
