Things went downhill quickly at the recent 10th annual Orca District Pinewood Derby.

Eight dens showcased their speediest creations at the races,  with their pack’s champion competing in each of the four den divisions: Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos.

The Pinewood Derby is a racing event for Cub Scouts in the Boy Scouts of America. With the help of parents, kids build their own cars from wood, usually from kits that include a block of pine, plastic wheels and metal axles.

The Orca Runoff Derby, held on Saturday, April 20 in Silverdale, was a big success, and islander Cort Satterwhite won first place for the Wolf division.

Cort is part of Pack 4545, a new pack that began in 2012. He previously won the local Pinewood Derby held at Rolling Bay Church on March 16.

For more information about joining the pack, made up of island boys in first through fifth grade, e-mail Alex Brown at alexabrown37@gmail.com.
