Being well, staying well: Healthy Living Expo 2009

The fourth annual Bainbridge Island Healthy Living Expo is on tomorrow, with a broad-reaching emphasis on prevention, well-being and a “healthy” dose of fun.

The event, staged by the Chamber of Commerce, runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Woodward Middle School. The exhibition space will feature an interactive trade show with presentations, speakers, health screenings, workshops and physical demonstrations galore covering everything from fitness to nutrition to general wellness.

Anyone up for actually participating in fitness-related activities – as opposed to just hearing about them – can join the family fun run led by runner and Bainbridge Review contributor Jim Whiting. Island cycling guru Steve Rhodes will also lead a pre-Chilly Hilly warm-up ride. Local entertainment favorite Guy Sidora will lead kids’ activities, too.

Two nationally known health experts, one a Bainbridge resident, will be the keynote speakers. Robin Miller, author of “The Smart Woman’s Guide to Midlife and Beyond” will discuss the health issues particular to women entering later life.

Islander Ira Longini will take on “A Community Conversation – Are We Ready for Pandemic Flu?”

Longini, who serves as head of a research team at at Fred Hutchinson Research and is a professor of biostatistics at University of Washington, will provide information about what might really occur during a pandemic flu or a bioterrorist attack with an infectious agent such as smallpox, or other natural threats Expo organizers encourage all professionals working in public health and safety to attend the free seminar, which will take place at 1:30 p.m. No reservations are necessary.

For a complete schedule of Healthy Living Expo speakers, workshops and demos scheduled throughout the day, see the event guide at www.bainbridgechamber.com.
