BUSINESS BRIEFING

No-frills gym at Pavilion

The fitness center at the Bainbridge Pavilion will be operated more as a “card key-based workout gym with showers and dressing rooms” after the contract with the Bainbridge Athletic Club expires on Sept. 30, said Eric Fredricks, co-owner and manager of the building

“The intent is for a workout place that offers the basics and is inexpensive,” said Fredricks. “We’ll have the treadmills, bikes and weights like always, just very little staff. And no towels... bring your own.”

The “Xpress” operated by BAC included personal trainers, massage, orthopedics, daycare and training classes.

“Those were money losers for a building in a prime retail location,” Fredricks said. “We feel that there are a lot of people who just want a place to work out and shower. That’s what we’ll provide.”

Frederick said he hasn’t decided yet on a monthly fee, “but I’d like to see it be maybe a dollar a day... something like $35 a month.”

He said the original vision of the owners was try to have The Gym at the Pavilion keep pace with the activity at nearby Island Fitness, but that the philosophy wasn’t paying off.

In June, the Pavilion had a change in ownership. Fredricks and Mike Patterson, along with new owner John Eisenhauer, bought out the interests of Jeff Brien, Sam Granato, Scott McFarlane, Jared Vogt, John Hempelmann and George Lobisser. Brien and Granato are now tenants as owners of Bainbridge Cinema.
