Silver Screen eyes new location in Village Shopping Center

Silver Screen Video has served Bainbridge Island for over two decades. Now they are moving on — across the street.

The video rental store will shift its location into the Village Shopping Center where Radio Shack was formerly located.

Jeff Clark, general manager of Silver Screen, said the exact date for the move is a bit fuzzy at the moment, but they are shooting to be in their new space on Oct. 1.

Clark said the new spot will offer greater visibility and foot traffic than their current location just around the corner on Hildebrand Lane.

“We kind of have a huge store for what we are, we don’t need this space any more,” he said. “This saves us money on rent and there’s better foot traffic over there.”

The new space will be just under half the size of the store’s current spot, but Clark said that the services offered won’t change.

To help accommodate the change and free up space on their shelves, Silver Screen is holding a sale. They won’t be letting go of any DVDs they have limited selection of, but rather items with multiple quantities.

Clark said he’s looking to sell 3,000 to 4,000 DVDs.

This isn’t the first move for the video store. Clark bought up the business in 1988, it was open a handful of years before that. Before moving to their current location in 1997, the shop was housed at the Winslow Green, where Bainbridge Bakers currently seats its customers.

New media such as online video streaming has cut into profits for video rental stores in recent years. Clark said that Silver Screen has taken around a 50-percent hit in sales since 2006.

Recently, however, things have leveled off and business has been steady.

“We have pretty good built-in clientele,” Clark said.
