Bainbridge entrepreneur plans to open organic burger joint

Bainbridge Island has plenty of farm-fresh restaurants with culinary chops, but one island man has a beefy idea about how to take it to another level.

Josh Bortman, also a co-owner of another Winslow business called Pretty Stick, is branching out into another entrepreneurial endeavor — burgers.

“There are places that have burgers on the island,” Bortman said. “But there are no ‘burger joints’ on the island.”

Soup’r Burger is Bortman’s latest project. The restaurant will specialize in, just as its name suggests, soups and burgers all made the Bainbridge Island way with healthy, organic, homemade and local ingredients.

“It’s going to be classic all-American burgers, but made with natural and organic ingredients,” Bortman said.

“It will be a gourmet product but at an affordable price,” he added. “Casual, but high-quality food.”

For Bortman, who comes from a culinary background, it is a return to his passion for cooking great food. The burgers will be made from grass-fed beef and the buns will be made fresh every day.

The burger joint is steadily on its way to the island. The location is set, but Bortman cannot say specifically where just yet.

What is known, is that by Oct. 31, Bainbridge Island will have its very own burger joint and all islanders are welcome.

It promises to be more treat than trick.

“It will be affordable and family friendly,” Bortman said.

Bortman has also set up a Kickstarter page for his new project. Kickstarter is a website where businesses and other ventures can ask for donations to help get things rolling. Bortman already has the business well on its way, however, he would like donations to help decorate and spruce the place up and make it worthy of the title “burger joint.”

Depending on the size of the donation, islanders who are hamburger helpers will get a burger meal and shake for a minimum donation of $25. Other levels of donations starting at $100 and up are available offering greater meal deals.

The top pledge of $5,000 will earn an islander free burgers for life, the opportunity to name and design a burger on the menu, plus an annual burger party for up to 50 friends with food, music and drinks.
