BAINBRIDGE BUSINESS BRIEFING | Business | Jan. 7
Shoppers buying local win big
Troy Niehaus and Erin O’Hara were selected as the grand-prize winners of two downtown shopping sprees worth $2,300 in $50 gift certificates to the 46 businesses that participated in the Bainbridge Island Downtown Association’s Holiday Passport Program.
The goal of the program is to encourage shoppers to buy local during the holiday season. Each of the 46 participating businesses issued a stamp in shoppers “passports” when they spent $10 or more. Shoppers who collected stamps from at least half of the businesses were eligible for the drawing.
Shoppers submitted 47 completed passports, almost five times more than the previous year, and generated just under $11,000 of purchases at the stores.
O’Hara said that filling out the passport was a family activity she and her daughters completed together.
Other participants said the program was an enjoyable way to visit stores they hadn’t previously visited.

As of Jan. 1, Dave Manning and Julie Meyers are the new co-owners of the local Prudential Real Estate office.
Manning, the firm’s managing broker for the last two years, and Meyers, a sales associate, recently purchased the business from Judy Newkirk, who has suffered from an illness in recent years.
“It’s been an honor to work for Judy and now we will just try to carry on her tradition,” Manning said.
